Almost 300 emergency personnel -- 78 missing police officers and 200 firefighters -- are presumed dead along with the 266 people on four hijacked airplanes that crashed in terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Philadelphia. (CNN.com 9/11/01)
Hundreds of firefighters and emergency service workers are feared among the thousands injured, missing and dead following terrorist attacks this morning at the World Trade Center in New York and Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
Among the many rescuers killed in New York was FDNY Chief of Department Pete Ganci, 1st Deputy Commissioner Bill Freehan and Raymond M. Downey, FDNY Special Operation Commanding Officer, were killed as well as Rev. Michael Judge, the Department's Chaplain, according to the FDNY Press Office late Tuesday night.
Downey headed FDNY's FEMA USAR team and had been involved in numerous rescue operations, including the previous bombing of the World Trade Center and the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing.
An estimated 200 firefighters may have died and as many as 80 police officers were believed to be missing Tuesday after two planes slammed into the twin skyscrapers in lower Manhattan.
