The Fire Protection League of Arkansas (FPLA) started as an informal group of concerned mechanical, electrical, and fire protection engineers along with fire alarm and sprinkler contractors, working together with fire marshals, state health officials, other authorities, and owner representatives to improve fire protection in Arkansas.  The group first met in October 2003 and has tried to hold monthly meetings since.  In the spring of  2004 the association officially voted to name themselves the Fire Protection League of Arkansas.

The group meets over an extended lunch to discuss critical issues and provide training.  Some of the issues discussed or trained over have included:

  • NICET qualifications for fire protection contractors
  • Sprinkler and fire alarm specifications
  • Responsibilities of the design engineer vs. the contractor vs. the AHJ
  • Seismic requirements for sprinkler systems under the IBC
  • Standpipes and wet manual vs. wet automatic in single and multi-story buildings
  • Low suction control devices on all fire pumps
  • Plan requirements
  • Elevator requirements regarding fire protection
